I would say the advantage of 1) is that you can have windows that are
bigger than the physical screen-resolution.
3) might be confusing (mixing of concepts) for novice users.
I'm thinking about whether to switch to 1).
I think I will write a system to set this on the fly (maybe with a simple
GUI...)
