This is not normal. Do you see anything on the standard error, like
"[FVWM][PositiveWrite] <<ERROR>> Failed to read descriptor from FvwmEvent"

Can you write a minimal .fvwm2rc to reproduce this?

I am not sure why it is bad to install sound files on the server side to
be accessible for everyone and configure the path in /etc/rplay/rplay.conf
or similar.

But it is possible to play the file that is on the client side, rplay
should see it (use absolute path if needed), rplayd should not see it.

Anyway it is not related to the window manager. :)
