Yay,
    After taking the monster step of reinstalling all of linux (I used a newer
version of Redhat that I had lying around) the configure and install worked
great, and I'm now runnign fvwm2 !

PS Does anyone know how to stop the mousepointer turning into a huge blue
rectangle when in xlock ??
