Now, if a little advertising is allowed ...
        (not very off-topic, I like and use fvwm2 ;)

        Check http://nether.tky.hut.fi/iconstore/

I've collected 48x48 icons from the net, and you
can preview them, pick them one at a time or a
pack at a time. Copyrights belong to the respective
authors, but as far as I know, all the icons there
        are at least freely distributable.

Format is jpg, tif or xpm, and when converting, use
something like GIMP or ImageMagick, XV leaves the
transparency information out of the saved xpm:s.
If you use that you must edit the background color
to transparency color by hand (which isn't terribly
hard if you take a look in a xpm where transparency
        info exists).

        All the best,

        Tomi
