fvwm 2.5.5 works perfectly here with gnome2.2.
You may hav to put

Style *panel* NoTitle, NoHandles, Borderwidth 0

in your configuration.

metacity is such a poor windowmanager, fvwm is the best alternative.
I guess it's even the only one, that realy works.
