Promoting Tolerance in the New World
A New Technology Project For Schools

Introducing... Promoting Tolerance in the New World, the first module of DiversityClassroom.  DiversityClassroom is a new web-based learning portal providing brief training modules on basic and advanced diversity topics.  It is designed to serve the needs of a broad community including students, employees and managers.  DiversityClassroom will allow organizations and schools to provide training on the newest concepts in diversity in a timely and cost effective manner.

Promoting Tolerance in the New World is a new software program designed especially for students and parents.  Children around the world are struggling to cope with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and beyond.  This module teaches students basic terms and concepts associated with the Arab culture and Islam religion.  In addition, it helps them develop an understanding of how Arab Americans and Muslims are similar to and different from other Americans.

Software Features include:

  • An interactive student tutorial where the student is guided through the topics by a cartoon character called “Professor Ed.”  A quiz follows the tutorial to test student learning.  Successful completion of the tutorial and quiz results in a Certificate of Completion (suitable for framing).
  • A Diversity Guide on Tolerance For Parents to ensure parental involvement.  The Guide provides in-depth coverage of the topics covered in the student tutorial.  Parents and children must work together to complete a quiz at the end of the Guide and return a signed certification form to the educator.
  • A Diversity Guide on Tolerance For Educators including all information provided in the Parent’s Guide as well as the student tutorial.  Educators can use this Guide to develop lesson plans for this activity and to follow along with the students as they complete the tutorial.

Students have many questions about the terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center, Pentagon, elected U.S. officials and ordinary citizens.  This software answers some of these questions including:

  • Who are Arab Americans?
  • Who are Muslims?
  • What is a terrorist?
  • What is a stereotype?
  • What is the Arab culture like?
  • What does the Islam religion teach?
  • Are terrorists usually Arab?
  • Why are stereotypes dangerous?

Promoting Tolerance in the New World is a fun and easy way for students to learn about Arab Americans and Muslims as a technology project at school.  It provides a wonderful opportunity for parent involvement as the parent and child work together to cope with the terrorist attacks and America’s war on terrorism.  It can also be a character building experience for the child as he or she learns about the importance of understanding and respecting different cultures and religions.
