Lots of suggestions, but nobody mentioned this:

CDE XDM has a menu on the xdm window that allows you to choose the mode.
(least in my experience ;) One of the options is openwindows. When I
select this, when I log in I get fvwm instead of cde (becaue my .xsession
starts fvwm instead of openwindows) Perhaps there's an option like this on
the HP? CDE XDM quite convieniently remembers what your last chosen mode is
once you put in your username, so you only have to set it once. Couldn't
say about HP, though all the HP's I've had the (mis?)fortune to stumble
across here have been running CDE.
