Uh, never mind. I'm a bonehead.
I naively thought I could get the R6.3 xmkmf by typing,
`/path/to/x11r6.3/bin/xmkmf'. But xmkmf is just a wrapper script that
calls imake, so if R6.1's imake is ahead of R6.3's imake in your PATH,
then all confusion breaks loose.
The solution, of course, was to simply place /path/to/x11r6.3/bin/ in
front of /path/to/x11r6.1/bin/ on my PATH. fvwm-2.0.44 then compiles
successfully on this platform (X11R6.3/Solaris-2.5/sparc).
Sorry for the false alarm.
