Well, to answer Chuck's questions:

1) Even a simple 1-button definition doesn't work. Nothing appears.
2) I'm running on a SUN Sparcstation2 with SunOS 4.1.3_U1

I compiled FvwmButtons with the Debug options turned on AND the -g flag.
After a few failed invocations I noticed a core file in my home directory.
Here's the stack from that file:

(dbx) where
xpmParseColors() at 0x174c8
xpmParseDataAndCreate() at 0x1517c
XpmCreateImageFromData() at 0x11d5c
PleaseAllocColor(color = 0xf7fff430), line 1139 in
"/home/jselam/fvwm/fvwm2.0/modules/FvwmButtons/FvwmButtons.c"
GetColor(name = 0x227c0 "Black"), line 1229 in
"/home/jselam/fvwm/fvwm2.0/modules/FvwmButtons/FvwmButtons.c"
RecursiveLoadData(b = 0x21d80, maxx = 0xf7fff568, maxy = 0xf7fff564), line 817
in "/home/jselam/fvwm/fvwm2.0/modules/FvwmButtons/FvwmButtons.c"
main(argc = 6, argv = 0xf7fff5f4), line 439 in
"/home/jselam/fvwm/fvwm2.0/modules/FvwmButtons/FvwmButtons.c"

This reminded me of earlier complaints on the mailing list about
incompatibilities between FvwmButtons and certain versions of libXpm. I'm
using version 3.4h. It so happens I have a copy of 3.4a lying around, so
I used that instead, and voila! It works.

Apparently there's still some incompatibility in there. Unfortunately, I
don't have the time to narrow it down any further. Hopefully Jarl or someone
else can use this information to find the problem.
