I seem to remember this exact same problem when I first compiled
2.0.39 on IRIX 6.0.1. I left it alone for a few days, came back and recompiled
and this time it worked. I might have got some different compiler
options, but I don't know what, I'm afraid.

I now have a working 2.0.40 on IRIX 6.1 which also runs under 5.3.
I'll have a go with 2.0.41 later this week if I get a minute.
