I had *exactly* this same problem and it drove me nuts. The problem
turned out to be that I was linking with some old X libraries, from
OSF1/1.3 -- I think they were X11R4 or maybe 5. But the include files
were for X11R6 -- somewhere along the line the <x,y> coordinates in
some event structures got shifted around. The solution was to delete
the told X library and link with the correct ones. The problem
promptly vanished.
