I finally got around to read your mail more carefully and to look
into the problem. It's not a problem of active icons but of xterm
icons in general. I tried it with 2.0.38 (the oldest version I have
handy right now), 2.0.46 (the last 2.0.x release) and the latest
debvelopment stuff. xterm icons don't accept input with either
version while rxvt does with all of them. rxvt and xterm have
identical keyboard focus behaviour, so it can only be a problem of
xterm. Perhaps this was broken in xterm some time in the past.
